We live in a Digital Age. Things that would have seemed impossible merely decades ago are now capable in the blink of an eye. One of the areas that has advanced the most is of course computer technology. While the hot trend is tablet and smartphones, computers and laptops are really how this whole revolution got started.
One of the most important aspects of computers is networking and connectivity. In order to achieve this, unless they run solely off wireless internet, most computers utilize some sort of network Ethernet cable. Not all network Ethernet cables are created equal though. In fact, there are a few different variations/models that have changed over the years.
Here are three of the most common type of network Ethernet cables you’ll find in the world today.
- CAT5 Cables: CAT5 cables are slightly older, but still one of the standards when it comes to Ethernet cables. With a maximum frequency of 100 MHz and the ability to transmit up to 10/100Mbps, Category 5 (CAT5) was defined in ANSI/TIA/EIA 568A, but is not used with ANSI/TIA/EIA 568B. These cables can be used for networks and mulit-line phone systems.
- Specialty CAT5 Cables: Before the release of the CAT6, there were modifications made to the CAT5 that became known as CAT5e cables and CAT5e crossover cables. Also used for phone lines and networks, the CAT5e has a maximum frequency of 100 MHz and can transmit up to 10/100/1000Mbps. If it’s a crossover cable, that simply means it can connect two of the same kind of devices, such as computers.
- CAT6 Cables: The latest installment in the network Ethernet cable industry is the CAT6. These cables are primarily used for networks and really stepped up their game when it comes to ability. These cables have a maximum frequency of 500 MHz and can transmit up to 10/100/1000Mbps and 10Gbps.
The world of networking and computing cables may seem like a dull and boring topic, but there are constantly innovations and changes being made that help to deliver the content, products, and services you now have at your fingertips daily.
