For the most part, HIPAA messaging systems were created so that medical professionals could transfer information and files to one another without worrying about breaking doctor-patient confidentiality agreements. The HIPAA Privacy Rule deals with both the use and disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI) held by entities such as health care clearinghouses, employer sponsored health plans, health insurers, and medical service providers that engage in certain transactions with patients.
In the past couple years, there has been an increase in the amount of mobile healthcare applications that have been created, such as secure text messaging for healthcare professionals and HIPAA messaging services. Overall, they make the jobs of health care professionals a lot easier, as it cuts down the amount of manual work they have to do and allows them to communicate easily without worrying about breaking the rules or keeping things secure. That makes sense, because one of the intentions of HIPAA was to make health-care and medical information standard across multiple channels and providers.
